Personal Introduction
In this brief video, Andreas Rossen introduces himself, his commercial background in dry bulk chartering and freight trading, and the ways he can support shipowners, operators, commodity companies and investors.
Hello, my name is Andreas Rossen.
I am a commercial shipping professional with more than twenty years of international experience in dry bulk chartering, freight trading and business development.
Throughout my career I have traded freight across the Handysize, Supramax, Ultramax and Panamax segments, built long-term customer relationships and helped establish and develop new commercial shipping organisations.
My approach is built on three things: experience, professionalism and flexibility. Experience, because I have worked across international dry bulk markets through very different market cycles. Professionalism, because trust, transparency and reliable execution are what keep customers and counterparties coming back. And flexibility, because every organisation is different, and commercial support has to fit the business it serves.
Underpinning all of it is integrity. In this industry your word is your contract, and a reputation for being trustworthy is built over years and lost in a moment. I hold myself to high professional standards, I am straightforward in how I communicate, and I do what I say I will do — whether I am negotiating freight, representing an owner in the market or advising on a commercial decision.
Today I am available for permanent, interim, advisory and project-based assignments. That could be joining an established shipping organisation, supporting freight trading and chartering activity, developing customers and cargo, entering a new market or helping establish a new commercial office.
If you are a shipowner, operator, commodity company or investor looking for experienced commercial capacity, I would be glad to talk.

Market Insight
Freight markets move faster today: decision windows are shorter and geopolitics can reroute cargo flows overnight. In this video, Andreas Rossen explains how he uses AI to work through market data, research counterparties and sanity-check assumptions — and why performance risk, negotiation and vessel selection still come down to experience, relationships and commercial judgement.
I am Andreas Rossen. I have traded dry bulk freight for more than twenty years, and I have seen a lot of different markets.
But one thing is clear: freight markets move faster today. Decision windows are shorter, sentiment changes quickly, and geopolitics can reroute cargo flows almost overnight. That creates risk, but also opportunity.
This is where I increasingly use AI. Not to replace experience, but as one more input alongside everything else on my desk.
I use AI to work through market data faster, to research counterparties and cargo flows, to synthesise reports and to sanity-check assumptions before I commit.
But what AI cannot tell me is whether this owner will perform, whether the charterer is bluffing on the last five hundred dollars, or whether to take the cargo now and utilise for our own fleet, or go out and find the best suitable ship in the market, or simply hold for a better position tomorrow. That still comes from experience, relationships and judgement.
And that combination is what I bring: more than twenty years in dry bulk freight, strong relationships across the market, commercial judgement and a genuine drive and passion for this business.
That energy is what gets me to the desk early, keeps me learning and keeps me pushing for the right answer when the market is moving against you.
I am currently available for permanent, interim, advisory and project-based opportunities in commercial shipping. If you see a potential fit, I would be happy to talk. You can find my full contact details at andreasrossen.com. Thank you for watching.
Case Study
Four cargoes out of the Eastern Mediterranean, a freight market moving the wrong way and no controlled tonnage matching the laycans. In this case study, Andreas Rossen explains how he stopped looking at four individual fixtures, took a Supramax on a four-to-six month period with flexible trading terms, and used the optionality that created to turn an overall loss position into a net profit.
In dry bulk shipping, creating commercial value is not only about fixing the right cargo or vessel at the right rate. It is also about recognising when the market is moving against you — and having the commercial judgement and experience to act.
Let me give you a practical example. In a previous role, I had booked four cargoes out of the Eastern Mediterranean, all shipping within four to six weeks: two to West Africa, one fronthaul to Asia, and one backhaul to the US Gulf.
After fixing the cargoes, the freight market started moving against my position. I had no controlled tonnage available matching the specific laycans, and covering all four cargoes individually with single time-charter trips from the market would have resulted in considerable losses.
So instead of looking at four individual fixtures, I looked at the overall exposure. The question became: how can I manage the risk by creating new commercial opportunities?
I decided to change the strategy. I fixed a Supramax vessel for four to six months at approximately USD 15,000 per day, negotiating flexible trading terms that gave me considerable freedom in how I employed the vessel.
On the first employment, I used her for the US Gulf cargo, giving me around 30 days of employment and approximately break-even results. But importantly, I now controlled the vessel beyond the original cargo commitment. That gave me optionality. It also allowed us to pursue additional customer business that we otherwise would not have been able to take.
As the market subsequently strengthened significantly in the US Gulf and US East Coast region, I actively managed the vessel's employment and generated approximately USD 2.5 million in profit over the remaining period.
The other three cargoes still had to be executed in a difficult market, resulting in combined losses of approximately USD 1.5 million. But by managing the position as a whole, we turned what could have been a USD 1.5 million loss into an overall profit of approximately USD 1 million.
And that is the key point. Risk management is not simply about avoiding losses. It is about understanding your exposure, managing the risk, and creating optionality that can generate new commercial value.
Markets will sometimes move against you. What matters is recognising it early, understanding your alternatives — and having the commercial judgement, experience and drive to act.
If this approach to freight, risk and value creation is relevant to your organisation, I would be happy to start a conversation. I am Andreas Rossen. More than 20 years in dry bulk chartering — and still razor-sharp at the fixing desk. You can find more information about me at andreasrossen.com. Thank you for watching.
